Gov't Mule

The Mule train pulled out of the station A Million Miles From Yesterday and as the trip got underway Thorazine Shuffle was the sounding horn that let all know that this ride would be a memorable journey from embarkation to terminus. It was all aboard for a cue-cardless Don't Step On The Grass Sam and the Slow Happy Boys made the party come alive. I believe that tonight's I Believe To My Soul may have been one its finer outings. Changing gears as the set came to a stop, I'm A Ram-> Love Me Do-> I'm A Ram sent the passengers away to refresh themselves before the second leg of the journey began.

As the Mule train pulled away from our respite the engines' roar rose From A Whisper To A Scream as the Trane-> Third Stone From The Sun Jam-> Trane kept rolling like a Rocking Horse. Hook Herrera came into the engine car and was heard to exclaim "I Can't Keep From Crying tears of joy on this Wang Dang Doodle of a ride." The wheels racing across the rails at fever pitch sounded like the beating of Drums and reduced our transport to a smoking and steam belching Beautifully Broken heap. With the pinnacle in sight, it was a Sco-Mule that delivered us into the blinding Soulshine. With Hook leading the way home we were Goin' Down Slow and all said that they Can't Hold Out for a whole year until the Mule returns.

Warren started this show acapella with Grinnnin' In Your Face with a snarling Bad Little Doggie on it's heels. Three hot selections from High & Mighty, Mr. High & Mighty, Brand New Angel and Unring the Bell followed in blazing fashion. Painted Silver Light made a glorious appearance and had the venue not been underground, the set ending Thorazine Shuffle would have razed the building.

Play With Fire, penned by a few local lads was the set opener with Soulshine following. Hook Herrera joined in the fun to lend his musical stylings to It Hurts Me Too and That's What Love Will Make You Do. Post Drums, Warren's guitar screamed out during Endless Parade and drove the groove on the set closing Mule. Hook once again joined in for the two song encore; Nobody's Business and 32/20 Blues.

The last show of the 2007 European Tour got underway with Danny funkin' it out during John The Revelator with a rockin' Thorazine Shuffle in the second slot. Streamline Woman and I Can't Quit You was an impressive one-two punch that left many dazed, but Unring The Bell was resuscitative and Rocking Horse got the adrenaline flowing. In this one set show, Hook Herrera stepped up to deliver blistering renditions of 32/20 Blues and I Can't Keep From Cryin' before handing the reigns back to the Mule who closed the set with Mule and the night with Soulshine in the encore slot.

The 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota was the scene of the first Mule show back on US soil this summer. Hammer And Nails built the framework for a great festival set with a rollin' Time To Confess that followed. A Triumvirate of classics; Thorazine Shuffle, Patchwork Quilt and Beautifully Broken filled out the middle of the set but the I'm A Ram/Love Me Do medley brought the crowd to its feet. Already standing, the crowd exploded into cheers when fellow Brother Derek Trucks took the stage for a smokin' 32/20 Blues. The end of the set saw Unring The Bell, filled with gooey jams, roll into Blind Man In The Dark to close and Soulshine as the encore.

RockFest, having hosted KISS the previous night, had a stage littered in confetti and the remnants of their set. It is also an apropos title for the festival because rock is just what the Mule did. Blind Man In The Dark opened the show in the pouring rain and Mr. High & Mighty followed. About To Rage rocked then rolled into Larger Than Life. After A Million Miles From Yesterday, a powerhouse run of classic Mule ensued. Rocking Horse, Banks Of The Deep End, and a Bad Little Doggie that flowed into Lola Leave Your Light On left many a stunned fan standing mouths agape in the torrential downpour. With the end of the set visible, the Mule kicked, and kicked hard with Mule and Soulshine to end the set and the rain.

Pentaport Rock Festival

After a flight that felt longer than most tours, the Gov't Mule band and crew arrived in South Korea surprisingly well rested. Having traversed 21 time zones in nine days from Europe to Asia through Minnesota and Wisconsin, this well-oiled international machine proceeded to rock the socks off the Pentaport Music Festival in Incheon. A short but powerful set was mustered so that a quick getaway to Japan's Fuji Rock festival could be accomplished. This take-no-prisoners 1 hour set started with Blind Man In The Dark and a tasty Bad Little Doggie, while Brand New Angel and Streamline Woman setup a knockdown performance of (pun intended) Seoulshine. The hits kept on coming as the rest of the set was filled out with performances of Thorazine Shuffle, Slackjaw Jezebel and Mule; all of which show that music is truly an international language understood by all.

Fuji Rock Festival

Fuji Rock, the largest festival in Asia was truly a sight to behold. Situated in a perfectly picturesque and mountainous region of Japan, the beast known as Mulezilla left a heavy footprint in its wake after a stunning three hour non-stop performance. Closing out and headlining the night at the Field Of Heaven stage, an enraptured crowd watched the Mule knock out 20 tunes in a row (23 if you count the ->'s). Hammer & Nails started the evening which was followed by Thorazine Shuffle and a definitive Time To Confess. Other highlights included Lively Up Yourself with Since I've Been Lovin' You in tow and It Hurts Me Too with the harmonical stylings of G. Love. Lola Leave Your Light On-> About To Rage is the stuff that legends are made of as was Matt's Drums-> Blind Man In The Dark to close the set. The crowd, not sated with the encore of Soulshine, demanded the return of the band for a second encore which was a hotter than wasabi Mule that featured Stevie Wonder's Superstition-> Shakedown Street Jam in the middle before returning to Mule and the end of the show, the night and Gov't Mule's 2007 international foray into musical diplomacy. The greatest compliment and summation of the trip was what was said to me at the end of the night: "The best Government to come out of America is Gov't Mule".

The Mule's return to tour started with Hammer And Nails and a boogieing Time To Confess. Playing as if they hadn't had the last month off, tunes such as Lively Up Yourself and Since I've Been Lovin' You stormed through the crowd. She Said, She Said-> Tomorrow Never Knows was played as well, if not better than recent memory serves. Ron Holloway joined in on 32/20 Blues and blew his horn and the crowd away. Three powerhouse hits from High & Mighty, Unring The Bell, Streamline Woman and Brand New Angel helped to raise this single set to impressive standards. Thorazine Shuffle closed out the set and the perennial favorite, Soulshine was hired to play the encore and close the show and the festival.

Madman Across The Water was the first song at Warren's solo show at The Belly Up and set the groundwork for an unbelievable evening. Patchwork Quilt was followed the story of it's inception which in turn was followed by a beautiful cover of Wild Horses. Other surprises would be glorious renditions of Forevermore, To Lay Me Down and Everyday Is A Holiday. After a quick and humorous bluegrass style tease of War Pigs, The set ending combo was deemed to be That's Why I'm Here Intro-> Soulshine. The first of two encores began with So Weak, So Strong and Old Friend and the second encore consisted of It Hurts Me Too, The Sky Is Crying and a soaring version of Hallelujah to close out the night. Having just finished up the Allman Brothers' summer tour, Warren headed out on his own for a solo show at the glorious amphitheater in Mishewaka. Indian Sunset started the show with a beautiful Patchwork Quilt to follow. There were many highlights such as the seldom heard Glory Road, Real Thing and Lay Of The Sunflower.
